-
Thinking that Thursdays are dress-down days on Capitol Hill,
- STONE GOSSARD and JEFF AMENT of the band PEARL JAM appeared
- in alterna-garb--long velvet shorts, a backward baseball cap--to testify at a congressional hearing on the price of concert
- tickets. "All of the members of Pearl Jam remember what it is
- like to not have a lot of money," said Gossard. The attire was
- not off-putting. Said California Democrat Lynn Woolsey: "I just
- think they're darling guys."

-
MICHAEL KEATON will crusade with a cape no longer. The star
- of the first and second Batman movies has backed out of the
- third installment, Batman Forever. He will be replaced by VAL
- KILMER, best known for playing Jim Morrison in 1991's The Doors.
- Keaton explained his decision only by saying that he "looked
- forward to having the opportunity to play a wide variety of
- roles of many genres." Rumors circulated that he feared being
- eclipsed by co-stars Jim Carrey and Tommy Lee Jones. But the
- actor's agent denied that: "A man who has done Beetlejuice,
- Mr. Mom and Clean and Sober--this is not a man who really
- worries about being upstaged."

-
Just a few months after his friend and former teammate Darryl
- Strawberry entered drug treatment, New York Mets pitcher DWIGHT
- GOODEN was suspended from baseball for 60 days after failing
- at least two drug tests. Gooden has been administered random
- tests since he underwent rehabilitation for cocaine abuse in
- 1987. At the time of Strawberry's troubles, Gooden remarked,
- "I know how bad my problem was, and that's what keeps me away."
- Another celebrity athlete also ran afoul of drugs last week.
- Argentine soccer star DIEGO MARADONA was barred from the remainder
- of the World Cup tournament after a test showed that he had
- taken various stimulants.

-
Controversy may sell many things, but according to ELIZABETH
- TAYLOR it won't sell perfume. The actress will file suit against
- the publisher of an upcoming biography that she claims contains
- erroneous and damaging information. The suit will also name
- NBC, which plans a movie based on the book. The author of the
- bio reportedly alleges that Taylor was abused by three of her
- husbands. Taylor's lawyer believes that this could thwart sales
- of her fragrance, Passion.

-
Who better than dashing, urbane British actor HUGH GRANT to
- issue a late 20th century manual for men on style and manners?
- Grant's How to Be a Gentleman will include counsel on tying
- bow ties and dressing to meet your loved one's parents.
